In Superkids we are beginning to learn sight words or "memory" words which are words that students should be able to recognize quickly without sounding out. We will also be learning how to spell these words for first grade. Here are some fun ideas to reinforce our sight words of the week with items you may already have at home.
Idea 1: Sight Word Games Sight Word Checkers/Chess:Write the key words for the week on a sticker on the bottom of checkers/chess pieces and each time your child wants to make a move they have to read the word. You can also tape the words on pieces of paper to the actual board and have your child read them as they move to new spots. Sight Word Candyland: Tape a sticker or piece of paper to the back of the color cards. Each time your child draws a card to move, he/she must read the word. Newspaper Search: If you have newspapers or magazines at home, your child can go through and try to highlight or circle the words of the week. Idea 2: Sight Word Sensory Play Bath Time Spelling: Children can practice spelling the weekly words with shaving cream or soap in the shower or tub. You can also put shaving cream on a cookie sheet and have them practice spelling the words on there instead. Play-Doh Words: Children can practice forming the letters to spell words out of play-doh. Flour Words: You can put flour on a cookie sheet and have students practice writing their words.
