Here are some pictures of the fun activities we did in October! We made a special spider snack and played a skeleton game with our 2nd Grade buddies in Mrs. Seery's class. We loved our Halloween party! Thanks to our wonderful room parents for planning and running the party! We celebrated our great behavior at our 1st quarter PBIS movie and snack party with the other kindergarten classes.

In Science we are studying plants and animals. Last week we learned about what tools scientists use to study the world around them. We practiced making observations using our five senses by taking a walk around the block to look for living and nonliving things in our neighborhood. We saw flowers, heard cicadas, and felt the wind blowing.
In math we played a fun game called "Shake and Make 5". We shook up counters and dumped them out to see how many were yellow and red. This is laying the foundation for when we formally learn about addition later in the school year by helping students to understand that numbers can be broken apart into groups. It is important that students correctly form their numbers and letters. Proper formation makes it easier for children to move across the page easier as they write. Below is a song we use in class to remember how to form our numbers correctly. In Superkids, the sequence in which the letters of the alphabet are taught is aligned with the way they are formed. For example, we will be learning curved letters "C, O, G" first as they are all formed using a similar motion and build off of one another. Please let me know if you have any questions or if you would like any resources to reinforce number and letter formation at home! In Superkids we are beginning to learn sight words or "memory" words which are words that students should be able to recognize quickly without sounding out. We will also be learning how to spell these words for first grade. Here are some fun ideas to reinforce our sight words of the week with items you may already have at home.
Idea 1: Sight Word Games Sight Word Checkers/Chess:Write the key words for the week on a sticker on the bottom of checkers/chess pieces and each time your child wants to make a move they have to read the word. You can also tape the words on pieces of paper to the actual board and have your child read them as they move to new spots. Sight Word Candyland: Tape a sticker or piece of paper to the back of the color cards. Each time your child draws a card to move, he/she must read the word. Newspaper Search: If you have newspapers or magazines at home, your child can go through and try to highlight or circle the words of the week. Idea 2: Sight Word Sensory Play Bath Time Spelling: Children can practice spelling the weekly words with shaving cream or soap in the shower or tub. You can also put shaving cream on a cookie sheet and have them practice spelling the words on there instead. Play-Doh Words: Children can practice forming the letters to spell words out of play-doh. Flour Words: You can put flour on a cookie sheet and have students practice writing their words. This week we have been using learning about letter "L". We used our SeeSaw app to draw pictures of objects that start with "L" and to take pictures of words and objects around the school and label them.
We also used the app to share a video of our favorite part from yesterday's field trip. If you aren't connected, you can find the information to signup below. You can get notified when your child adds new items to the online journal. It's completely private -- only you can see your child's journal outside of class. Click on https://app.seesaw.me/s/527-714-217 to sign up -- it takes just 30 seconds. Once you sign up, you can download the Seesaw Parent app for iPhone or Android, or access your child's journal on the web. You are able to "like" and comment on your child's posts. Please let me know if you have any questions! This week we worked on sorting and counting groups of objects in math. To wrap up our learning, we got to use a special math tool: Skittles! The students picked which categories they wanted to sort their Skittles into. We then talked about which categories had more/less Skittles in them. It was a fun and special treat!
Thank you to the families that helped out with our class party and sent in treats! We had such a fun day celebrating! On Monday we got to meet our buddies in Mrs. Seery's second grade class! We made ooey gooey ghosts and had a special Halloween treat!
This week we have been working on making 10. We did several hands on activities to reinforce the concept. We played a game where we worked with partners to pick a card and build a tower of 10 cubes. Everyone loves working together to work on math tasks!
